    BYSurrey offers a HOT therapeutic Hatha/Raja Yoga series based on the Bikram beginner's sequence of 26 yoga stretching postures, and breathing exercises. Each pose is a challenge based on one's personal abilities, and is suitable for all ages and physical abilities. Postures are done in the safe environment of a heated room. By the end of a class session, each individual will have worked every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, internal organ, and gland while systematically moving fresh, oxygenated blood to 100% of the body. The result is restoration of health to all systems. As you increase strength, flexibility and balance in your body, you will be energized, you will revitalize your mind, and you'll be working on eliminating conditions of stress produced by fast paced lifestyles. These postures work synergistically and cumulatively to put the body back on track and in balance. This yoga builds strength, balance and flexibility by gently stretching and massaging the spine, muscles, tendons, joints, and all internal organs of the body. Lung capacity is expanded, leading to greater vitality. Bones are strengthened. Joints are opened and lubricated. Muscles are strengthened, toned, and made more flexible.

    Based on the 26 postures of the Traditional series, the pace is faster and the sequence altered slightly to accommodate a few more postures and variations. There is less "dialogue" than the Traditional class but there will be 2 full sets of all the postures. This is not a "light" class. Postures are held for teh same aount of time as the Traditional class. The pace is stepped up and so will your cardio. Come prepared for a new challenge. The same rules of etiquette apply, prepare for class as you would any regular class and remember you may not leave the room during class but there is music. BYSurrey invites all students to try the Arrow class. It will be a pleasant surprise if you regularly practise Bikram yoga some where else and try out our Arrow (26 postures in 90 minutes?? We think you can do better!)

    Because 30 minutes on your yoga mat is better is than no time on the yoga mat, BYSurrey hosts a Short Form yoga series. This class is not meant to replace your regular practice. But if you are looking for a quick pick-me-up part way through your day or know your day is too full to fit in a full class, this may be exactly what you need. If you ever find yourself with time to spare over lunch, why not plan on a quick yoga session to work your body and refresh your mind? It's only 30 minutes so you'll have enough time to make it to the studio, shower, have a quick sandwich or smoothie (eat after class) and be back to work before lunch is over.

    Class begins with a short meditation, followed by a series of asanas developed to work various areas of the body. Each class focuses on a series of six to eight postures targeting the hips, shoulders, legs, and the spine. Expect to spend between two to seven minutes in each asana allowing you to work the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. There is very little "dialogue" and instead postures are called out and timed. You will be offered help with postures that may seem new, and the instructors will demonstrate correct alignment as well as alternate postures for injured or tight bodies. The Yin series is not intended as a complete practice in itself, but rather as a complementary practice to balance the effects of your regular practice. Consider taking the class before or after your Yin class. The same rules of etiquette apply, prepare for class as you would any regular class and remember you may not leave the room during class. You may however talk and there will be music. The postures are more focused on the floor and many students will benefit from the use of a yoga block for stability, correct alignment or a deeper stretch. Bring one if you have one or consider purchasing one at the studio.

    Kundalini yoga has been described as "yoga for householders." It's meant to fit into the daily grind of work and parenting. Though the repetitive motions of some poses can be tiring, you don't have to be in excellent shape to practice Kundalini yoga, nor do you have to commit your life to the practice. Kundalini yoga is not based in any philosophy of asceticism or self-denial. Each class consists of a different kriya, or set of poses that are designed for a specific purpose, such as opening the heart, fighting off illness, or nurturing creativity. Each class includes mantras and meditations that support the purpose of the kriya. The purpose of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken the Kundalini energy that rests at the base of the spine. Two lines of energy move up and around the base of the spine, intersecting at seven points referred to as the chakras. Each chakra has a function that keeps us healthy. The rhythmic, steady movement of kundalini poses starts the flow of energy and corrects any imbalances in the chakras. Once the energy starts moving, the yogi becomes more aware, more integrated with reality, and moves into a state of higher consciousness. The greater awareness and peace lead to a happier, more productive life.

    The BYSurrey Phoenix series is another step closer to the Titan class. Starting with the popular sun salutations and flowing through an expanded Arrow class, our Phoenix series allows for deeper stretches, better upper body strength and balance and the opportunity to move into full inversions. If you have a regular yoga practice but still feel the need to hit the gym come try a Phoenix class. You can get your yoga in and not need the gym! All students are welcome to attend the Phoenix classes but be aware that Phoenix rising is an intermediate level and Phoenix Burning is intermediate-advanced. We do suggest students be familiar with the Arrow class first.

    An Archer has an ability to develop a balance of strength and determination, dedicated focus, and a calm controlled breath. The Archer class is a 75 minute Intermediate yoga class that works both the Yang and Yin aspects of your practice. The first half of the class is a powerful Vinyasa flowing sequence, with introducing Sun Salutations (Upward facing Dog and Downward facing Dog) throughout the first 35 minutes. You will work towards building a strong core, improving your balance, and be challenged with new postures. The last half of the Archer class will be a deep Yin sequence focusing on opening the hips, easing tight ligaments, and finding peace of breath through meditation while in the postures. This class is designed for Beginner to Intermediate students. Traditional, Express, and the Phoenix class are suggested to take prior to your first Archer class.

    Pilates is similar to yoga but emphasizes your body's core — the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh, butt, and so on. For this reason, Pilates develops much of what exercisers need — strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture — with a much lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise. The discipline emphasizes correct form instead of overexertion.

    Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, usually referred to simply as Ashtanga yoga, is a style of yoga codified and popularized by K. BYSurrey sets aside time for posture/alignment reviews of the asanas you may find more challenging in the Traditional, Arrow and Phoenix classes.
